Lloret de Mar Swimming Event

Lloret's swimming club will be taking to the cold sea for they're first organised dip of the year on 8th January. This is an event where anyone can take part, whether your 2 or 72, but the club does recommend that after coming out of the sea you thoroughly dry yourself in order not to catch cold. The weather forecast is good but the sea will feel very cold on entering! The first dip of the day will be at 11am near the yacht club, another dip will take place at 12.30.
So far the record number of those taking part was in 2007 when 180 braved the cold.
All being well l hope to be there myself but l'll be all wrapped up taking a few photos!

Shopping in Girona

Last week l was Christmas shopping in Girona and what a nice surprise to see a large shopping centre all nicely decorated for the festive season. All the shops were lavishly trimmed up and all selling just about anything and everything you could possibly want or need! Such a nice change from the shops here in Lloret!

Lloret de Mar Winter

Lloret is looking very different these days, here's a few shots to show those who only visit in the summer what the town is like during the winter months!

Out and about with the camera yesterday, as you can see it looks a little depressing with the empty beach and streets. Many of the hotels are now boarded up and closed until next year, also a lot of businesses such as restaurants, fashion stores, novelty shops are closed.

Of course it will be much livelier for the next 2 week ends with the Christmas & New Year celebrations and also for the day of the Kings on the 6th Jan....and after that the town goes back to sleep!

Lloret de Mar Christmas

Lloret's tree outside the town hall
The shops in Lloret are very busy these days with just about everyone in town and also visiting holidaymakers trying to get their Christmas shopping done. The Spanish celebrate the holiday just as we do in the UK but they will be sitting down to eat  their main meal on Christmas eve. The 6th Jan is the day that the children will be waking up to find that the three kings have been and delivered all their gifts while they were sleeping. They will have already been out to see the Kings procession arrive in their town the night before, this is a massive event for the children as all those taking part in the parade throw sweets out to the crowds and the kids try to catch as many as possible!

Lloret's Classic Cars

Classic cars were on show at the monthly Sunday market yesterday, including the Cortina Lotus above which is owned by a well known bar owner in Blanes!

Not sure what this is!

Lloret de Mar Christmas Fare

The church square was crowded yesterday with people looking around the traditional Christmas fare stalls. Local produce goods were on sale, but it seems the most popular stalls were the ones giving out free tapas & wine provided by the Xino Xano organisation!

Lloret de Mar Christmas Fare

A traditional Christmas fare market is to be held in the church square tomorrow 11th Dec. Local produce ie: homemade breads, pastries, wine and  liqueurs will be on sale 10am - 2pm. Medicinal creams and herb concoctions will also be on sale,  the stall has something to treat  just about every ailment going!
At the same time the usual monthly market will be taking place in the carousel square. Stalls here are mostly antiques & collectable items (or should l say second hand!) Very interesting books, old photos, postcards from all over Spain are usually on sale.
Some stalls sell very nice handmade jewellery, ornaments and toys etc which may solve 1 or 2 of your Christmas present problems!

Christmas in Lloret

I had to look twice yesterday when a 4 x 4 vehicle passed me with a trailer on the back on which there were 2 police bikes. I've often heard people saying that the police seem to be getting younger these days but they would have to be getting a lot smaller as well to be able to ride these bikes! As the driver of the vehicle pulled up further down the road he let me take some photos before he pulled into his garage to unload them. Inside the grounds of the villa l could hear 2 little excited voices waiting to see their presents, not policemen at all but his two young sons!

Lloret Beach - Tirada a l'Art

There was plenty of activity on Lloret beach today where hundreds of people congregated for the annual Tirada a l'Art event. All those who join in continually pull on the rope to drag the fishing net from the sea, but today after tugging and pulling for about a hour or so when they finally got the net in there wasn't a single fish landed. It looks to me that maybe the Med is running out of fish!

Lloret de Mar Events

A yearly reconstruction of one of the oldest methods of fishing can be seen on Lloret beach tomorrow at 8am and again at 1pm. Many of the locals will gather just as they did years ago to pull in the (hopefully full) fishing nets which have been cast out to sea. Tirada a l'Art shows how the nets were manually dragged from the sea by the people of Lloret in exchange for a few fish to feed their families. Once the nets are in the catch will be cooked and served on the beach for those taking part. See the video below....weather permitting we'll get our own photos and video tomorrow!
