Lloret de Mar - Weather

The weather for the Cost Brava has been dreadful this holiday week- end. It always seems to take a turn for the worse at Easter, but this year seems to be worse than ever.
We travelled up to Lloret from Barcelona yesterday evening after arriving back after a few weeks holiday on the Costa del Sol, trying to escape the winter here in Lloret! On arriving at Barcelona at about 3.30pm the weather wasn't bad at all, but then it started raining and just got heavier and heavier!
When we reached Santa Susanna it was quite dark and could see that the beach looked very pale...then we realised it was snow. It was completely covered!
It's the first time after living here for 4yrs that I have ever seen it! On reaching Lloret it was just raining but very cold, so it looks like our plans to escape the winter here failed...

Not to worry we'll try again next year!

A trip to Pals

Pals is a lovely little medieval town and always worth a visit even through the cold winter months. You will always find some of the little shops and restaurants/cafes open where you can pop in for a hot coffee if it does get a bit too cold as you walk around its  beautiful cobbled streets.

There was lots of snow on the mountains in the distance when we visited just yesterday. (Monday 2nd Feb)

Lloret de Mar Power Cuts

Many homes in Lloret have again been without power, this time for 2 hrs last Thursday 27th May, when some parts of the town were left in the dark from 6pm - 8pm, and again yesterday (1st June) for just over an hour.
For the residents this must have brought back the awful memories of March 8th when most towns along the Costa Brava were without power owing to electricity pylons crumbling under the weight of the snow which fell on that day....Lloret residents being the worst affected with some having no power for up to 5 days!
The electricity supplier Endessa have received a total of 38,000 claims from local businesses and homes who are hoping to receive some sort of compensation for the distress caused. It seems that the electricity supply here in Lloret is still not yet back on a permanent basis.

Views over Blanes

Today I'm showing you more of our photos we took from high up above the town of Blanes from the Sant Joan tower. In the photo below you can just make out the snow on the Pyrenees mountains which separate Spain & France, quite a strange experience when our weather is so mild just now with temperatures reaching almost 20ºc somedays!

Bad weather in Spain

Winter temperatures in Spain are forecast to take a sharp drop over the coming few days with bad weather warnings issued to nearly 40 provinces through the country, the warnings are for heavy rain, snow, gales and freezing temperatures. Today however in Lloret after such a long period of sunny days and very little rain we have a dull rainy day with a current temp of 6ºc...so not as bad as some places!

This weekends photos from Lloret and Fenals beach.

A day in Pals from Lloret

If your looking for a day out with a difference then I recommend you visit 'Pals' which is only about 64km from Lloret. Pals is perched on a hill overlooking the Mediterranean sea just 5-6kms away, and looking in the opposite direction are the Pyrenees mountains which at this time of year are covered in snow. Within the walls of the old medieval town are lovely cobbled streets and numerous pretty old stone archways with several very good restaurants and a number of craft shops etc.

Costa Brava Summer

As yet there is no end to the Costa Brava summer, although Lloret is much quieter these days with fewer tourist's in town. We are now well into November, and the weather is still very warm, with still a few holiday makers sunbathing on the beaches. The current temp is 21c, with just a little light cloud.

Many hotels and shops are closing down for the winter.

The biggest majority of visitors here now are from France. With only being about 1hr drive from the border, its quite easy for them to nip down here for a weekend break by the sea!
Also during the winter months, a lot of Spanish pensioners come to the coast for a bit of sun, as its now starting to cool down inland.
Snow has already started to fall in the Pyrennees which is good news for the skiers.

The Weather in Lloret de Mar.

At last it's stopped raining!
We had four day's of heavy rain down here on the coast, (not for getting the snow inland) but this picture was taken today 1st Feb, as you can see the sun is shining again!
Temperatures are rising again and feeling quite warm in the sun. Just nice for taking a stroll on Lloret promenade, (we even ate breakfast out on the balcony this morning!!)
How long will it last though?
Winter is not over yet until the end of February at least!. Posted by Picasa

Time for a Lloret de Mar Summer Photo

As we are all so fed up of the rain and snow and mist and cold here I think we should fast forward a few months to the summer!

This picture was taken in June 2005.

It was a quiet month, and for the business owners here, we hope 2006 will be better, so don't be shy, book your lloret de Mar holidays 2006 now.
