Llorets Week Long Power Failure.

Owing to the week long blackout caused by the snow and falling of the electricity pylons which serve Lloret de Mar and other Costa Brava towns there now seems to be an understandable outrage by the local businesses and residents. The estimated figures quoted by the hotels for lost trade is said to be €1.5 m for Lloret alone. This takes into account tourists not coming to town and also food which has rotted in the fridges and freezers.

Restaurants and bars are claiming to have lost
€2 m, not taking into account trade lost owing to the premises having to remain closed during the power failure.
Schools have now been open from Monday after being closed for almost a week, it was hoped the schools would have been able to open last Friday but they first had to be
checked to ensure no damage had been caused by the heavy snow fall.
A demonstration is to be held in Lloret tomorrow (Wednesday 17th March) by business owners and residents. This is against the power company 'Endessa' for the distress caused due to the lack of management and service to the infrastructure.

Hi Jackie, we have just returned from a holiday in Lloret de mar and i have to tell you most of what is reported is right and much worse.

We arrived on Sunday 7th March staying at the Royal Star hotel. We woke on Monday morning to what seemed like rain which quickly turned into a full on blizzard by 10 am and lasted well into the evening.

Tuesday morning there must have been 6 inches of snow. Thankfully it was sunny and we were able to go out for a walk, it was then we discovered that the whole town was cut off from power as there were hardly any shops or restaurants open and any that were, were in total darkness, the only light coming in was through the front doors.

We expected this too only last a few hours but as you know it lasted all week, we lefton Friday and there was still no power.

Luckily our hotel had a generator so we were able to entertain ourselves slightly. The downside to the generator problem was that our rooms were right above it and after 2 full days of it running constantly the fumes from the diesel were leaking into our rooms resulting in us having too pack up and move to another part of the hotel at midnight.

I swear you couldn't write a movie script like this no-one would believe it. It was like planes, trains and automobiles only not as funny.

I felt so sorry for the residents of the town they were so angry and couldn't believe in this day and age that the powers that be couldn't have got the situation resolved any sooner.

Thankfully we are home relatively unscathed and it was so unfortunate that the week we decided to go to spain for a bit of sun, to get away from our own cold weather, they have the worst snow they have seen for 50 years.
